CHENNIA, India, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Top seed Carlos Moya survived a match point Thursday to make his way to the quarterfinals of the Tata Open.
The Spaniard rallied for a 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 victory over American Paul Goldstein in their first-ever meeting.
"I thought I was going to lose," Moya said. "But I kept fighting and things can change. I was very lucky."
Moya had a 6-2 lead in the second set tiebreaker, but lost five straight points to hand Goldstein a match point at 6-7.
Moya's opponent in the final eight will be Frenchman Thierry Ascione, who also overcame a first set loss against wild card Prakash Amritraj of India before winning, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Dutchman Sjeng Schalken, seeded third, bounced Austrian qualifier Julian Knowle, 6-3, 6-3. Schalken takes on fifth-seeded Felix Mantilla of Spain.
