Boxing Hall of Fame gets six new members

CANASTOTA, N.Y., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Azumah Nelson and Carlos Palomino were among the 2004 inductees to the International Boxing Hall of Fame named Thursday.

The others were light heavyweight Dwight Muhammad Qawi, super bantamweight Daniel Zaragoza, referee Stanley Christodoulou, promoter J. Russell Peltz, and writer W.C. Heinz. They will be inducted during Hall of Fame weekend from June 10-13.

Nelson, a three-time champion, won the WBC featherweight title in December 1984. The native of Ghana moved up to super featherweight and captured the WBC strap in February 1988. In May 1990, he tried to win a lightweight title but lost a unanimous decision to Pernell Whitaker.

He retired shortly before his 40th birthday and was 39-5-2 with 28 KOs.

Palomino, a native of Mexico, captured the WBC welterweight title with a 12th-round TKO of John Stacey in June 1976 and made seven successful defenses.

Zaragoza, a crafty southpaw, had 66 fights in a career that spanned from 1980-97. The lanky Mexico City native first captured the WBC bantamweight title in May 1985.
