Blue Jays ink two

TORONTO, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- The Toronto Blue Jays have come to terms on one-year contracts with righthander Terry Adams and shortstop Chris Gomez.

Adams will be paid $1.7 million and Gomez $750,000.

Adams, 30, joins a rebuilt staff that includes Pat Hentgen, Ted Lilly, Bruce Chen, Kerry Ligtenberg, Miguel Batista, and Justin Speier. He went 1-4 with a 2.65 ERA in 66 games for the Philadelphia Phillies last season. In 497 major league games with three teams, he is 45-46 with 39 saves and a 3.97 ERA.

Gomez, 32, hit .251 with 15 RBI in 58 games last year with the Minnesota Twins. In 1,080 games with four clubs, he has hit .253 with 52 home runs and 374 RBI.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated righthander Pete Walker for assignment and catcher Tom Wilson was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres.
