NHL: Ottawa 1, New York Islanders 0

OTTAWA, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Peter Schaeffer scored with 5:55 remaining and Patrick Lalime made 32 saves Friday night as Ottawa outlasted the New York Islanders, 1-0.

The Senators extended their unbeaten streak to eight games and the Islanders had a six-game winning streak snapped. Ottawa improved to 6


2 since a 3-2 loss to Boston on Dec. 13.

Lalime made 10 saves in the first period and 11 in each the final two periods as he recorded his second shutout of the season and 30th career. The Islanders had scored 25 goals during their winning streak.

New York's Garth Snow, who had yielded just eight goals in his last five games, finally was beaten when Karel Rachunek passed the puck from behind the net to a wide-open Schaeffer, who fired it over the goaltender's left shoulder. Snow made 22 saves.
