SAN DIEGO, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- As reported, David Wells has signed with the San Diego Padres.

The 40-year-old southpaw has signed a one-year contract, giving him an opportunity to finish his career in the city in which he attended high school.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the New York Post reported it to be worth between $1.5 million and $1.75 million. The Post and San Diego Union-Tribune reported the signing in their Wednesday editions.

Wells was 15-7 with a 4.14 ERA in 30 starts for the New York Yankees last season, but appeared to wear out his welcome in the Bronx. He was fined $100,000 by the team in spring training for writing a book critical of the organization, then had to leave the fifth game of the World

Series after one inning because of an ailing back.

Last season, he became the 23rd lefthander ever to win 200 games. He posted a 68-28 record and his .708 winning percentage is the highest all-time among New York lefthanders.
