WASHINGTON, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The Washington Redskins announced Tuesday that Steve Spurrier resigned as coach after compiling a 12-20 record in two seasons.
Spurrier had three years left on a five-year, $25 million contract, and forfeited all of the $15 million he had coming to him over the next three years.
"I simply believe that this is the right time for me to move on, because this team needs new leadership," Spurrier said. "Obviously, all of the losing can wear you down, but I believe that the franchise is headed in the right direction."
Spurrier was lured away from the college ranks with the richest contract ever given to an NFL coach.
"I have accepted Steve's resignation with much regret, but respect his decision," said Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, who will now need to hire his fifth coach since buying the team in 1999.
The pro experience turned into a nightmare for the 58-year-old Spurrier.
