COL FB: N.C. State 56, Kansas 26

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Philip Rivers passed for a career-high 475 yards and five touchdowns Monday as North Carolina State outscored Kansas, 56-26, on the Tangerine Bowl.

The ACC Player of the Year, Rivers threw for more than 4,000 yards in the regular season. Tuesday, he threw a 45-yard TD pass to Richard Washington just 62 seconds into the contest.

Rivers connected on a 14-yard touchdown toss to Washington in the second quarter and to running back T.A. McLendon for a three-yard score that made it 28-10 at halftime.

Rivers completed TD passes of 40 yards to Brian Clark in the third quarter and 21 yards to Jerricho Cotchery in the fourth.

Rivers completed 37-of-45 passes and went over the 400-yard mark for the fifth time this season.

McLendon had a pair of rushing touchdowns for North Carolina State (8-5).

Kansas (6-7) was making its first bowl appearance since the 1995 Aloha Bowl.
