SAN DIEGO, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Former NFL quarterback Jim Harbaugh, in his second season as an assistant with the Oakland Raiders, Saturday was named new coach at San Diego.
It will be the first head-coaching job for the 39-year-old Harbaugh, who was introduced during a news conference at the school.
Harbaugh will complete his coaching duties with the Raiders before taking over at San Diego following the conclusion of the NFL season.
Harbaugh played 177 games during his 15-year NFL career with the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens, San Diego Chargers and Carolina Panthers.
Harbaugh's father, Jack, spent 14 seasons as the coach at Western Kentucky, leading the Hilltoppers to the Division 1-AA national championship last season before retiring.
The former Michigan star replaces Kevin McGarry, who was fired in October after 28 years in the program.
