ALBUQUERQUE, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Johnny Tapia, a five-time world champion in boxing, has been admitted to a hospital in New Mexico for what is believed to be an overdose.
As of Saturday morning, he was listed in satisfactory condition.
The Albuquerque Journal reported that his wife and manager, Theresa Tapia, called 911 on Friday morning to complain that her husband was ill. The paper said that he admitted to her that he had taken some pills.
"He was unable to sleep and wandered the house all night," Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department Dep. M.T. Beatty said in his police report. "At about 0630 hours, Mr. Tapia became agitated and disoriented."
A publicist for Team Tapia put out a short news release, stating that he was in satisfactory condition at University of New Mexico Hospital. There has been no word on what he took.
Last January, Tapia, who admits to being a drug addict, was in a coma in a Las Vegas, Nev. hospital for three days after reportedly overdosing on cocaine.
