PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Flyers have signed talented center Mike Comrie to a one-year contract.

The team did not disclose financial terms of the deal. The Flyers traded minor league defenseman Jeff Woywitka and two draft picks to the Edmonton Oilers for the rights to one of the NHL's young stars on Wednesday.

Comrie, 23, an Edmonton native, was a restricted free agent who made just over $1 million last season. He demanded a trade after the small-market Oilers were unable to sign him.

In 192 career games, Comrie has 61 goals and 72 assists, and his speed and skill has made him one of the league's top young centers. He had 20 goals and 31 assists last season after totaling 33 goals and 27 assists while playing all 82 games in 2001-02.

Comrie goes from inactive to one of the top teams in the NHL. Philadelphia leads the Atlantic Division with 45 points and is tied with the Toronto Maple Leafs for first place in the Eastern Conference.
