ATHENS, Ga., Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Two football players at the University of Georgia have been ruled ineligible for the team's Capital One bowl game Jan. 1 against Purdue.
Both players, wide receiver Michael Johnson and cornerback Kenny Bailey, are seniors. They failed to meet the academic eligibility requirements for the Southeastern Conference for postseason play.
Coach Mark Richt said both remain in good academic standing with the university.
"The SEC is the toughest conference," Richt said. "It has rules as far as how many hours you've got to get in the semester leading into the bowl. If we were in any other conference, they'd be playing."
Johnson is fourth on the Bulldogs with 27 catches for 297 yards and is tied for the team lead with two touchdown receptions. Bailey played in the nickel package since Decory Bryant's season ended because of a broken neck.
