Kevin Millwood goes to arbitration

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Free agent righthander Kevin Millwood has accepted salary arbitration from the Philadelphia Phillies, binding him to the club for a second season.

Millwood, 29, waited until just before the deadline to accept the arbitration offer and still could work out a multi-year deal with the Phillies.

He was 14-12 with a 4.01 ERA in 35 starts last season, his first in Philadelphia. His three shutouts tied for the National League lead and he finished in the top 10 for innings (222.0), complete games (five), and strikeouts (185).

On April 27, he became the ninth pitcher in Phillies' history to throw a no-hitter when he beat the San Francisco Giants, 1-0.

Millwood, who made $9.9 million in 2003, was the Opening Day starter in 2003 and was just the second Phillies pitcher since 1987 to make 35 starts in a season. He was acquired from Atlanta on Dec. 20, 2002 for catcher Johnny Estrada.

In 2003 career games, he is 89-58 with a 3.78 ERA.
