Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
SEATTLE, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Veteran shortstop Omar Vizquel of Cleveland failed his physical in Seattle on Tuesday, putting a trade between the two teams in jeopardy.
The Indians would have sent the nine-time Gold Glove winner to the Mariners for fellow shortstop Carlos Guillen.
"Thy told me I didn't pass the test on my knee," Vizquel told MLB.com. "It was kind of a shock. I was really looking forward to coming back and playing for the Mariners."
Last season, Vizquel underwent knee surgery in July and was limited to 64 games. He returned for the final four games of the season and batted .244 with two homers and 19 RBI.
"I was already picturing myself playing back at home," said Vizquel, a resident of nearby Issaquah. "My family was psyched, I was psyched."
Vizquel, regarded as one of the best defensive shortstops ever and a three-time All-Star, played five seasons for the Mariners before being traded to Cleveland in 1993 for Felix Fermin.
