Syracuse retains Pasqualoni

SYRACUSE, N.Y., Dec. 12 (UPI) -- After barely avoiding a second straight losing season, Syracuse has given football coach Paul Pasqualoni a reprieve.

Athletic Director Jake Crouthamel says Pasqualoni will return next season as will his entire staff.

"We don't need to lay a new foundation," Crouthamel said. "We already have a solid foundation and strong football tradition from which to draw."

A season-ending 38-12 rout of Notre Dame may have saved his job. . The win left the Orangemen at 6-6, but they tied for next-to-last with Rutgers in the Big East Conference at 2-5.

Also, the school failed to earn a bowl bid for the third time in four seasons.

"We are determined here to examine every aspect of our program and improve," Pasqualoni said.

In 2002, Syracuse finished 4-8 for its first losing season since 1986.

In 13 years as Syracuse coach, Pasqualoni, 54, has compiled a record of 101-53-1 and is 6-2 in bowl games. His 100 wins rank second all-time in school history, behind 153 by Ben Schwartzelder.
