Tuberville gets extension from Auburn

AUBURN, Ala., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville received a one-year contract extension on Thursday.

Following repeated denials, Auburn officials admitted late last month that they met with Louisville's Bobby Petrino regarding their football coaching position. Tuberville decided to stay after school president William F. Walker said the meeting was a mistake.

As an effort to make amends, Auburn extended Tuberville's contract through 2008. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"It's been a difficult last several weeks for the Auburn family, but it's time we move forward," Tuberville said. "We need to come together and concentrate on the future of Auburn football."

Last year, Tuberville signed a five-year contract extension, but the Tigers concluded a regular season of high expectations at just 7-5. That led to reports that the Tigers were interested in Petrino, a one-time Auburn assistant.

Tuberville is 37-24 in five seasons at Auburn and has won at least a share of three SEC West titles.

Auburn will play Wisconsin in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 26.
