ST. LOUIS, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday signed first baseman Steve Cox and infielder Brent Butler to one-year contracts.

After hitting .254 with 16 homers and 72 RBI with the Tampa

Bay Devil Rays in 2002, Cox was sold to the Yokohama Bay Stars of the Japanese Central League last December. He was limited to just 15 games and 50 at-bats with the Bay Stars before undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery.

Butler returns to the organization that drafted him in 1996. The Cardinals traded him to Colorado in November 1999 in a seven-player deal.

Butler began 2003 with Colorado and batted .211 in 37 games before being sent outright to Colorado Springs (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League.
