DETROIT, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Brett Hull took over third place on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list Monday 1:51 into overtime Monday as Detroit edged Los Angeles, 3-2.
Hull entered the game in a tie with Marcel Dionne with 731 goals, trailing only Wayne Gretzky (894) and Gordie Howe (801).
He nearly had the record earlier in overtime, when he rang a slap shot off the left post. Given a second opportunity, the 39-year-old right wing cashed in.
Jason Woolley found Mathieu Schneider at the right point and the defenseman slipped a cross-ice pass to Hull in the left circle, where he ripped a shot past Kings' goaltender Roman Cechmanek.
Brendan Shanahan and Pavel Datsyuk scored in the opening 6:25 of the contest but Los Angeles rallied on third-period goals by Mike Cammalleri and Martin Straka. Straka's goal, his seventh of the season, came with 2:10 left in regulation.
