WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Kevin Pittsnoogle drained a go-ahead three-pointer in the opening minute of overtime as West Virginia upset No. 25 Maryland, 78-77.
It was the consolation game in the BB&T Classic. In the contest, the Mountaineers (3-2) squandered a 16-point lead, built with a barrage of three-pointers.
They led 61-45 midway through the second half before collapsing, going more than five minutes without a basket, and scoring just five points in the final 14 1/2 minutes as Maryland (4-2) climbed back. The Terrapins forged a 66-66 tie on a three-point play by Nik Caner Medley, but never led after Pittsnoogle made his second three-pointer of the game.
Jamar Smith, Maryland's lone senior, scored 23 points and got the Terps within one in the final seconds with a basket off a missed free throw, but they suffered their sixth loss in 18 games in this event.
It was a lost weekend for Maryland, which lost to Gonzaga on Saturday.
