PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired veteran lefthander Eric Milton in a trade with the Minnesota Twins.
In the deal, the Twins got pitcher Carlos Silva, infielder Nick Punto, and a player to be named. The Phillies also will assume Milton's $9 million salary for the 2004 season.
Milton, 28, missed most of the 2003 season after undergoing surgery in March to have torn cartilage removed. He returned Sept. 14 and made three starts.
The deal likely signals the end of righthander Kevin Millwood with the Phillies. Milwood is eligible for arbitration, but reports have indicated that is no likely, though they still have a two-year proposal that he is said to be considering.
Silva, 24, a reliever for the past two seasons, will have a chance to step into Minnesota's starting rotation. He pitched 87 1/3 innings in 62 games last season.
