White Sox re-sign Sandy Alomar Jr.

CHICAGO, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- The Chicago White Sox on Wednesday retained Sandy Alomar Jr., signing the free agent catcher to a one-year contract worth $750,000.

The deal includes a club option for 2005.

Alomar, 37, batted .268 with five homers and 26 RBI in 75 games with the White Sox last season, serving primarily as a backup to Miguel Olivo.

Alomar has spent the last three seasons with the White Sox, excluding a short stay in 2002 with the Colorado Rockies, and has batted a combined .265 with 16 homers and 84 RBI in his Chicago tenure.

The former Gold Glove winner is a career .275 hitter with 109 homers and 543 RBI over 16 seasons. He ranks sixth among active catchers with 1,188 games caught.

Team officials did not indicate if his brother, second baseman Robby Alomar, will be re-signed.
