Pinkel gets extension at Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Gary Pinkel, the football coach at Missouri, has been given a new contract.

His original deal took him through the 2005 season, but in August 2002 that contract was extended through 2007. The new pact keeps him in Columbia through 2008.

Pinkel has made the Tigers bowl eligible for just the third time since 1983. The latest agreement increases his annual base salary from $192,000 to $250,000.

"The progress on the field speaks for itself, and then when you consider the inroads Gary has made in recruiting and the fact that this year we are playing a record number of times on television, those are just a few other tangible measurements that show we have the right guy for the job," said Athletic Director Mike Alden.

Pinkel previously coached Toledo for 10 years. He owns a career record of 89-54-3, and his .620 winning percentage is 20th among active Division I-A coaches.

This season, the Tigers returned to the polls and beat Nebraska for the first time since 1978.
