COLUMBIA, S.C., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- South Carolina football coach Lou Holtz, under fire during the Gamecocks' three-game losing streak, Tuesday received a one-year contract extension.
The deal keeps the 66-year-old Holtz under contract at South Carolina through the 2008 season. Despite a 5-7 finish last year, the school extended his contract through 2007.
In his fifth year at South Carolina, Holtz took over a program that had lost 21 straight games and guided the Gamecocks to back-to-back appearances in the Outback Bowl in 2000 and 2001.
But a loss to Clemson on Saturday will saddle South Carolina with its second straight 5-7 season. Holtz is 0-8 the last two seasons when needing a win to make the Gamecocks bowl-eligible.
With only five seniors listed on South Carolina's two-deep depth chart, Athletic Director Mike McGee is confident Holtz can get things turned around again.
