LOS ANGELES, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Kobe Bryant scored a season-high 27 points Sunday night to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 99-77 rout of the Miami Heat.

Also in the contest, veteran point guard Gary Payton had 13 points and eight assists, doing most of his damage in the first quarter against rookie counterpart Dwayne Wade, the fifth overall pick in this year's draft.

Payton had 11 points and five assists in the first period, helping the Lakers open up a 31-21 lead.

Payton made a steal and beautiful pass to Karl Malone for a layup, set up Shaquille O'Neal for a dunk, and sank a jumper for a 23-9 lead. The Lakers led by double digits for all but 2:12 thereafter.

The Lakers improved to 5-0 at Staples Center and extended their regular-season home winning streak to 20 games, one shy of the club mark.
