NEW YORK, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has hired Darryl Strawberry as the team's player development instructor.
He will work with the Yankees at Legends Field in Tampa, Fla. during spring training and remain in Tampa to work with young players in the club's system.
"I am pleased that Darryl has shown the strength and the determination to come back and re-establish a decent and productive life for himself and his family," Steinbrenner said.
Strawberry, 41, spent parts of five seasons with the Yankees (1995-99). While he was treated for stomach and colon cancer during his stint with the club, he also battled drug problems. He also has been kicked out of a drug treatment program and served jail time.
In parts of 17 major league seasons, Strawberry hit .259 with 335 homers, 1,000 RBI, and 221 stolen bases. In 1987, he hit .284 with 39 home runs, 104 RBI, and 36 stolen bases, but off the field problems kept him from fulfilling his vast potential.
