Rockies extend GM's contract

DENVER, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- The Colorado Rockies on Wednesday extended the contract of General Manager Dan O'Dowd and exercised their option on Manager Clint Hurdle through 2006.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Both were under contract through next season.

Rockies chairman Charlie Monfort made the moves although the team has endured three straight losing seasons. Colorado went 74-88 in 2003 and finished fourth in the National League West.

"Their knowledge and support of the process that we have in place makes them more than just good baseball men in my view," Monfort said. "They are key leaders who will help us continue to build a strong organization and bright future for the club."

O'Dowd was named general manager in September 1999 and came under fire for the signing expensive free agent pitchers Mike Hampton and Denny Neagle. The Rockies traded away Hampton while Neagle's contract expires after the 2005 season.
