Knee injury shelves Shockey for season

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Pro Bowl tight end Jeremy Shockey of the New York Giants has a partially torn ligament in his left knee.

Coach Jim Fassel announced Monday that Shockey is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks. He limped off the field with 10:34 remaining in Sunday's surprising 27-7 loss to Atlanta and did not return.

The injury initially was diagnosed as a sprain, but an MRI taken Monday revealed the torn ligament.

"This will involve mostly rehab and no surgery," Fassel said at his weekly gathering with reporters.

The loss of Shockey is another major blow for the Giants, who fell to 4-5 with Sunday's loss and trail Dallas (7-2) and Philadelphia (5-4) in the NFC East.

Shockey leads all NFL tight ends with 48 catches for 535 yards and two touchdowns. The first-round pick in 2002 led all tight ends and rookies with 74 catches for 894 yards last season.

Also, cornerback Ralph Brown will be sidelined three to four weeks with a dislocated right shoulder.
