British sprinter Chambers suspended

LONDON, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Sprinter Dwain Chambers of England has been suspended by the International Association of Athletics Federation.

The suspension comes after he tested positive for the banned designer drug THG.

The 100-meter European champion was banned pending a British disciplinary hearing. He faces a minimum suspension of two years and a lifetime Olympic ban, according to British Olympic Association rules.

According to UK Athletics, the IAAF confirmed that Chambers' backup B sample examined at a Los Angeles laboratory matched the test he gave at a training camp in Saarbrucken in August.

THG is a specially formed anabolic steroid, also known as tetrahydrogestrinone. In early October, he was informed that traces of THG had been found in his A urine sample. He immediately protested, claiming he was assured the only supplements he was given complied with the IAAF's anti-doping rules.

His legal advisors stresses there has never been an admission by their client that he had taken THG. Any plea by Chambers for clemency claiming ignorance will be ignored by the IAAF.
