Florida Marlins may change name

MIAMI, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- The world champion Florida Marlins have agreed to a name change to the Miami Marlins.

Team president David Samson told MLB.com, the official Web site of major league baseball, that the move is not designed to strengthen the effort to get a baseball-only retractable-roof stadium built in Miami-Dade County.

The team wants a retractable roof stadium because it rains a lot in Miami in the summer. The Miami Herald reported the name change would take place if the stadium is built

"It was an understanding," Samson said. "We didn't use it as a negotiating point. Our singular goal is to ensure the future of the Marlins for all of South Florida. We would never turn our back on people in Broward County and Palm Beach County."

The Marlins will pay $137 million toward a new stadium. $73 million will come from the city and county, leaving $115 million to be worked out.

The Marlins won the World Series by beating the New York Yankees in six games. They currently reside at Pro Player Stadium, which also is used by the Miami Dolphins for football.

The plan to build a new stadium, targeted for 2007, was made public on Tuesday shortly after the team's victory celebration. Land for the facility has not been determined.
