Newman posted a top lap of 194.295 miles per hour around the 1.544-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway in a Dodge Intrepid. He is the only driver to sweep both poles at more than one track this season, also doing so in Charlotte.

Newman's qualifying speed was the fastest of the 2003 season, eclipsing Bobby Labonte's lap of 193.514 mph set at Texas Motor Speedway in March.

Bobby Labonte was second at 194.016 mph, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s 193.319 mph -- both in Chevrolet Monte Carlos.
