INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Tony Renna, a driver for the Target Chip Ganassi Racing team, was killed Wednesday morning during a crash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The accident took place during a tire test as he was taking his first laps with his new team.
ESPN reported that Renna was going into Turn 3 when his car jumped sideways and became airborne. The car is believed to have cleared a four-foot concrete wall and crashed into the catch fence where it then broke apart in the cockpit area.
"Tony Renna was a rising star in IndyCar series racing," said IRL CEO Tony George. "All of us involved in racing feel a great loss. Our prayers and best wishes go out to his family, friends, team and fans."
Renna, 26, made only one IndyCar start this season, finishing seventh in the Indy 500.
The Florida native was scheduled to be married next month. He drove in the Indy Lights Series from 1998-2000 and made his IRL debut in 2002.
