Four American athletes took banned steroid

INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Four American runners who recently competed at the World Championships in Paris have tested positive for a banned steroid.

The BBC reported Wednesday none of the unidentified runners placed in the meet. All four, however, could be banned for life and fined $100,000 if a second round of testing upholds the results.

The USA Track and Field organization said all four were found to have tetrahydrogestrinone, or THG, in their systems.

The BBC said British sprinter Dwain Chambers also tested positive for the previously undetectable drug.

A new test for THG, developed at the University of California, was forwarded to the various associations by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Germany, France and Greece are among the groups planning to re-test blood samples taken during events this year, the BBC said.
