MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- West Virginia turned a pair of early turnovers into touchdowns Wednesday night and handed No. 3 Virginia Tech its first loss of the season, 28-7.
Two days after placing third in the first BCS rankings, Virginia Tech saw its hopes for a national title all but wiped out.
The Hokies became the highest-ranked team West Virginia has ever beaten. The Mountaineers nearly toppled No. 2 Miami earlier this month before falling, 22-20.
Senior defensive back Brian King picked off Bryan Randall's pass at the West Virginia 10 and the Mountaineers marched 90 yards in 11 plays. They took the lead on a seven-yard run by Kay-Jay Harris.
Randall fumbled at his 36 on Virginia Tech's next possession and Quincy Wilson scored three plays later on a five-yard run.
