Jim Sorgi has knee surgery

MADISON, Wis., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Quarterback Jim Sorgi of Wisconsin will be sidelined for at least one game after undergoing knee surgery on Sunday.

Sorgi started last week's 26-23 loss to Purdue despite being knocked out of the Badgers' previous game against Ohio State when he was choked by Buckeyes linebacker Robert Reynolds in the third quarter.

The senior also left in the third period against the Boilermakers after being tackled awkwardly. It was later determined he had been playing with a slight ligament tear.

"I think Jim's biggest mistake was I think he squatted," said Coach Barry Alvarez. "They slammed him pretty good and he got his leg caught up in there. You can't play cautious like that."

Junior Matt Schabert will make his first career start Saturday against Northwestern. Schabert replaced Sorgi against Ohio State and threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to Lee Evans that gave the Badgers a 17-10 win.

Sorgi could return for the Badgers' contest at Minnesota on Nov. 8. Wisconsin has a bye next week.
