MARTINSVILLE, Va., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Pole-sitter Jeff Gordon led 295 of 500 laps Sunday en route to the checkered flag at the NASCAR Winston Cup Subway 500 and a season sweep at Martinsville Speedway.
Gordon, who led 190 laps to win the Virginia 500 here in April, once again showed his short-track prowess by using a good-handling Chevrolet Monte Carlo to stay out of trouble on the crowded track.
The four-time Winston Cup champion led the final 206 laps to complete the first season sweep at Martinsville since Rusty Wallace in 1994. Gordon also is the first to win both Martinsville races from the pole since Fred Lorenzen in 1964.
Gordon came on strong in the end to score his second win of the season and 63rd career.
Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson finished one second behind. Defending Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ryan Newman rounded out the top five.
