Red Sox, Yankees resumes Monday night

BOSTON, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- The tense battle between the Red Sox and New York Yankees resumes Monday night at Fenway Park after an unpleasant confrontation on Saturday.

In a contest marred by three dugout-clearing incidents, Yankees' bench coach Don Zimmer had to hospitalized overnight. Zimmer, 72, was thrown to the ground by Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez shortly after Martinez threw a pitch behind the Yankees' Karim Garcia, whose back was grazed by the throw.

The Zimmer throwdown occurred after Manny Ramirez became incensed after a head-high fastball by the Yankees' Roger Clemens. As both dugouts emptied, Zimmer approached Martinez menacingly and with his left hand raised. Martinez then shoved him to the ground.

Zimmer offered an emotional apology on Sunday, when Game Four of the American League Championship Series was rained out.

The postponed contest is set to Monday night, when the opposing pitchers will be Game One starters Mike Mussina of New York and Boston's Tim Wakefield.

Knee injury shelves Ian Gold for season

DENVER, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Veteran linebacker Ian Gold of the Denver Broncos is done for 2003 after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee Sunday against Pittsburgh.

Gold was injured in the first quarter of the last-play 17-14 victory while covering a punt. The injury originally was listed as a twisted knee, but tests late Sunday revealed the tear.

"You could just see the grimace on his face and you could hear him making sounds and it didn't sound good," fellow linebacker Al Wilson told the Rocky Mountain News. "We knew it was going to be tough."

Gold, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, will undergo surgery in a couple of weeks when knee inflammation subsides, according to Coach Mike Shanahan, and spend the next six to eight months rehabbing.

His replacement will be Donnie Spragan, a 6-3, 239-pounder out of Stanford who has never made an NFL start. Until Sunday, his biggest contribution had been on special teams.

Against the Steelers, Spragan had seven tackles.

Also named to the team by captain Billy Jean King on Monday were Meghann Shaughnessy, Lisa Raymond, and Alexandra Stevenson.

Navratilova, who will be 47 on Thursday, will be the oldest player ever to play in the Fed Cup, and will be returning to its competition for the first time since 1995.

"This team is very excited about going to Moscow and we are going there to win," King said. "These four women are experienced, and Martina brings additional power to our lineup and prestige to this international competition."

The semi-retired Navratilova, who won 20 titles at Wimbledon, has a spotless record of 37-0 in Fed Cup, playing singles and doubles. She has played Fed Cup 21 times, five of those for her native Czechoslovkia.

The U.S. meets Belgium in one tie on Nov. 22 in Moscow. France meets Russia in the other tie.

12 laps were left in the race.

Also involved was Tomas Scheckter, who was not injured.

"I really don't know how it happened," Scheckter told the Dallas Morning News. "I was just keeping on my line, and the next thing I know I was going backwards, but the main thing right now, is just to hope that Kenny is OK and is going to recover."

Brack, who was IRL champion in 1998 and won the Indianapolis 500 in 1999, underwent surgery Sunday night. He has won four times in his career.
