FOXBORO, Mass., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- The New England Revolution clinched a playoff berth Saturday with a 1-0 win over D.C. United as Steve Ralston converted a penalty kick in overtime.
The penalty kick was awarded just 30 seconds into the extra period after Chris Bagley was taken down in the box by defender Brandon Prideaux.
It was the third goal of the season for Ralston, who wore the captain's armband and helped New England climb past United into second place in the Eastern Division.
D.C., which has not won an overtime game this season, remained one point from clinching its first playoff spot since 1999.
This was just the second time in MLS history a match ended on a penalty kick in overtime. Los Angeles defeated United on March 23, 2002 on a goal by Carlos Ruiz.
