Havlat ends holdout, signs with Senators

OTTAWA, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Right wing Martin Havlat ended his holdout Saturday night and signed a one-year contract with the Ottawa Senators.

Havlat had been seeking an annual salary along the lines of Tampa Bay's Brad Richards, who is making $2.4 million, and Philadelphia's Simon Gagne, who is being paid $2.6 million.

Havlat, 22, was fourth on the Senators in scoring last season and posted career highs with 24 goals and 35 assists, despite missing 14 games with groin and elbow injuries.

With 65 goals and 86 assists in 212 NHL games, the 6-1, 190-pound Czech has more points than any other player taken in the 1999 draft. Havlat will practice Sunday and Monday and accompany the team on its three-game road trip, which begins Wednesday in Los Angeles.
