Tracy claims provisional pole

MEXICO CITY, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Paul Tracy earned an important point Friday by claiming the provisional pole for the Champ Car World Series Gran Premio Telmex-Gigante.

Tracy, who leads the series with six victories, will look to secure his sixth pole of the season in Saturday's qualifying session. He averaged 112.893 miles per hour in a Ford/Lola, covering the 2.786-mile road course in 1 minute, 28.842 seconds.

Tracy is 14 points ahead of Brazilian Bruno Junqueira in the season standings. Junqueira was just five hundreths of a second slower than Tracy, clocking 112.813 mph in a Ford/Lola.

Sebastien Bourdais and veteran Jimmy Vasser were third and fourth after Friday's session. Bourdais is the leading rookie and is fourth overall with 142 points.
