MEXICO CITY, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Paul Tracy earned an important point Friday by claiming the provisional pole for the Champ Car World Series Gran Premio Telmex-Gigante.

Tracy is 14 points ahead of Brazilian Bruno Junqueira in the season standings. Junqueira was just five hundreths of a second slower than Tracy, clocking 112.813 mph in a Ford/Lola.

Sebastien Bourdais and veteran Jimmy Vasser were third and fourth after Friday's session. Bourdais is the leading rookie and is fourth overall with 142 points.
