Kafelnikov ousted in Moscow

MOSCOW, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Five-time champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov made a second-round exit Thursday at the Kremlin Cup.

Sargis Sargsian of Armenia beat the eighth-seeded Kafelnikov, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Kafelnikov captured this event from 1997-2001 and also was a finalist in 1996.

No. 5 Max Mirnyi of Belarus also fell to Austrian Stefan Koubek, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), to reach his fifth quarterfinal of the year. Koubek next meets America Vincent Spadea, who overcame qualifier Wayne Black of Zimbabwe, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.

The only men's seed to make it to the quarterfinals was No. 2 Agustin Calleri of Argentina, who defeated Irakli Labadze of Georgia, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

On the women's side, No. 3 Elena Dementieva beat Jelena Kostanic, 6-2, 6-3, for her ninth successive victory.
