Reports: Jerry Manuel to be fired

CHICAGO, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Jerry Manuel apparently is spending his final weekend as manager of the Chicago White Sox.

The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday that Manuel will not be retained as manager and that the announcement will come after the White Sox conclude their season this weekend in Kansas City.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Manuel already has been informed of the club's decision and that he has given the news to all or most of his coaches. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the official announcement is expected to be made on Monday.

"That's something we're going to try to keep out of these last four games," Manuel told the Sun-Times before Thursday's 7-3 loss to the Royals.

Manuel, 49, is in his sixth season and has one year left on a contract extension he signed in February 2001.

The White Sox are tied for second place with the Royals in the American League Central Division with an 83-76 record and are out of postseason contention.
