Maine awared victory despite cancellation

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- The Atlantic 10 has awarded Maine a victory and William & Mary a no-contest as a result of William & Mary's decision to cancel Saturday's football game.

Officials at William & Mary decided to cancel the contest because of the aftereffects of Hurricane Isabel. The school, located in Williamsburg, Va., will remain closed through Sunday because of continuing concerns regarding campus safety.

William & Mary (1-2) has no open dates on its schedule. The Division I-AA playoffs begin Nov. 29, one week after the Tribe's final regular-season game, so rescheduling the game basically was impossible.

"Our presidents and directors of athletics all agree that Maine should not be penalized because of its efforts (to play the game), nor should William & Mary because of the circumstances," said A-10 Commissioner Linda Bruno.

Maine, ranked 23rd in the latest Division I-AA coaches poll, improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Women's field hockey and volleyball games and a men's soccer game may be rescheduled at a later date.
