SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Heath Slocum and Bob Tway tied the course record with 9-under 61s Thursday to share the first-round lead at the Valero Texas Open.

Tway birdied seven straight holes beginning at the sixth. Slocum made nine birdies with no bogeys.

Australian Aaron Baddeley was alone in third at 8-under 62, having put together his round early in the day.

Tom Byrum, Cameron Beckman, Rory Sabbatini and Cliff Kresge tied for fourth at 63. Defending champion Loren Roberts birdied his final hole of the day to join a group of four others at 64.

Sergio Garcia marked his return to the PGA Tour with a 2-under 68 and attracted the largest gallery of the day.

Tway is coming off a two-week rest after winning at the Bell Canadian Open earlier this month.
