JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed veteran wide receiver Troy Edwards, who was waived on Aug.31 by the St. Louis Rams.
They needed a wideout after losing returner-receiver Jermaine Lewis, who is out for the season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee on a double-reverse play in Jacksonville's 38-17 loss to Buffalo on Sept. 14.
Edwards takes the roster spot of defensive end Brandon Green, who also is out for the year and placed on injured reserve last Friday because of a patella fracture injury.
Edwards caught 61 passes for 714 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1999, but over the next three years, he totaled just 55 receptions for 655 yards.
He was the Steelers' top pick in the 1999 draft out of Louisiana Tech, where was one of the most prolific receivers in NCAA history. As a senior, had 140 catches for 1,996 yards and 31 touchdowns in 1998.
