LEIPZIG, Germany, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Jelena Dokic advanced Tuesday to the second round of the Sparkassen Cup and her reward is a meeting with world No. 1 Kim Clijsters.
Dokic posted a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 victory over Croatian Jelena Kostanic in her opening-round match at the indoor tennis tournament.
The 20-year-old from Yugoslavia reached a career-high ranking of No. 4 at this time last year, but has slumped to No. 26 after dealing with off-court problems. She has broken off contact with her father after a disagreement over her boyfriend Enrique Bernoldi, a race care driver from Brazil.
No. 6 Nadia Petrova of Russia dispatched Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik, 6-2, 6-4, and No. 7 Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States was ousted by Belgian qualifier Els Callens, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4).
