Kansas City 7, Detroit 2

DETROIT, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Jimmy Gobble struck out a career-high seven in seven innings to help Kansas City drub the hapless Detroit Tigers, 7-2.

Also, fellow rookie Angel Berroa had three hits and three RBI. The Tigers set a franchise record with their 110th loss.

Kansas City has kept its fading playoff hopes alive against Detroit, winning consecutive games in the series after losing 17 of its previous 27. The Royals have won 12 of 15 meetings between the teams in 2003 for their highest victory total against the Tigers in any season.

The Tigers need to win eight of their final 17 games to avoid eclipsing the major league record of 120 losses set by the 1962 New York Mets.

Gobble (4-4) gave up two runs and five hits in his first appearance against the Tigers. Berroa had an RBI single in the second inning and a two-run single in a five-run fifth as Kansas City pulled away.
