Detroit 3, Kansas City 0

DETROIT, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Mike Maroth allowed four hits in six-plus innings and Warren Morris had a homer and two RBI Friday night to lead Detroit to a 3-0 win over Kansas City.

Maroth (7-20) had perhaps his best start of the season. The lefthander struck out four and walked two.

Matt Anderson worked an inning, Jamie Walker got the first two outs in the eighth and Fernando Rodney pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his second save.

Morris homered in the first and knocked in another run in the fifth to give the Tigers all the offense they needed.

The Royals, who came in 3 1/2 games behind the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox, failed in a key contest against baseball's worst team. The Tigers need to win four of their remaining 16 games to avoid setting the record for most losses in history.
