NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick showed great promise when he won the boys' U.S. Open title in 2000.

Roddick may have fulfilled that promise Sunday with a victory in the men's U.S. Open final as emphatic as his blistering serve. The fourth seed dominated new world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, to win his first career Grand Slam.

"It hasn't sunk in. I'm in disbelief right now, to be honest," Roddick said during the trophy ceremony.

Roddick's serve was considered the key heading into the match and it proved overpowering. He blasted 23 aces, boosting his total to 123 for the tournament, and won 89 percent of his first service points.

Warner hurt, Texans surprise in NFL action

NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Kurt Warner was sent to the hospital with a moderate concussion.

Coaches Dave Wannstedt and Bill Belichick are feeling pretty miserable too after the first Sunday of the 2003 NFL season.

Warner fumbled six times, was sacked six times and played like he was in a daze and, afterwards, Coach Mike Martz confirmed his quarterback was disoriented during the St. Louis Rams' season-opening 23-13 loss to the New York Giants.

Wannstedt can expect to face some heat after his heavily-favored Miami Dolphins were stunned by the Houston Texans, 21-20. And, Belichick had to weather a storm of criticism after waiving four-time Pro Bowl safety Lawyer Milloy earlier in the week, and then watched his New England Patriots get embarrassed by Milloy's new team - the Buffalo Bills, 31-0.

Oklahoma remains No. 1

MCLEAN, Va., Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Oklahoma remained No. 1 in the coaches poll Monday as Miami moved up to No. 2.

Miama (2-0) nearly saw its 34-game regular-season winning streak end Saturday but rallied from a 23-point deficit to post a 38-33 victory over Florida.

The Hurricanes switched places with defending national champion Ohio State (2-0), which was unimpressive in a 16-13 victory over San Diego State.

Oklahoma (2-0) became the first No. 1 ranked team ever to play Alabama on Saturday and came away with a 20-13 victory. The Sooners received 41 first-place votes and 1,543 points.

Southern California (2-0) received the other first-place vote and with a total of 1,333 points jumped up one spot to fourth, while idle Texas (1-0) dropped a spot to fifth.

Tway defeated Brad Faxon on the third playoff hole Sunday to win the Canadian Open and end a 213-tournament victory drought.

After both players parred the first playoff hole, Faxon had a chance to win at the second but missed a five-foot birdie putt.

Tway and Faxon finished 72 holes at 8-under-par 272. Tway fired his second straight 4-under 66 while Faxon carded a 67.
