Following a slugging 14-7 win over Louisiana-Lafayette last week, Coach Lou Holtz lamented that his Gamecocks (2-0) had little chance against the Cavaliers, saying "we should take the week off and sleep."

They took the lead for good midway through the second quarter on a 99-yard touchdown pass from Pinkins to Troy Williamson that gave them a 10-7 lead.

Virginia (1-1) managed just 170 yards without starting quarterback Matt Schaub, a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate, who injured suffered a separated shoulder last week in a 27-0 win over Duke.

His replacement, freshman Anthony Martinez, completed just 10-of-20 passes for 54 yards and was sacked twice, and star running back Wali Lundy gained just 35 yards on nine carries.

Alvin Pearman led the Cavaliers 91 yards on 17 carries.
