Morgan leads Kroger Classic by one stroke

MAINEVILLE, Ohio, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Gil Morgan, seeking his first win of the season,shot a 7-under-par 65 Friday and has a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Kroger Classic.

Morgan is third on the Champions Tour money list and the two players ahead of him, Bruce Lietzke and Tom Watson, are not competing this week.

Morgan has finished second four times in 20 Senior tournaments this year and has 11 top-10 finishes. Last week, he tied for second with Tom Kite and Jim Ahern at The Tradition, where Watson claimed his second major of the year.

Jerry McGee, Larry Nelson and Bruce Summerhays had 66s and are tied for second.

Morgan has 21 titles since joining the Champions Tour in 1996, most recently in June 2002 at the Bellsouth Senior Classic at Opryland. He has three top-five finishes in his last five events.
